Holy shnikies, it's been a year...

I haven't really worked on this one. I've decided to keep the DooM style weapons. I nearly used ponylumen.net to get the models but then I couldn't justify the guns and so it's all new spriting. I'm not good at spriting (that's what's really holding up Raridoom's Open Beta 3, tbh), and I'm not even sure the Conversion Bureau is relevant anymore (if it ever was).

But I'm not giving up just yet. There's still plenty that can be done with this idea.

See you all next year!

Spriting

So as you all know, I dislike spriting. I wouldn't say I hate it; but I would say it's not on my list of favorite things. It is on my list of unfavorite things, though, down there with ironing out ACS errors.

Well, I thought my days of spriting were over when I discovered this site. At first, I was very excited. No more spriting! I just pose my pony, download the shot, pop it into GIMP to resize it, and name it the right name.

And then I realized something.

That might work for the pegasi [lost souls], but the earth ponies and unicorns, not so much. Under the storyline, they're holding guns; and that's definitely not an option on the site. Also, when I get to bigger enemies, such as the Spider Mastermind and Cyberdemon, there's no way I'm making a giant pony. That's just silly.

On the dark side, this means that I will have to make my own pony sprites. Again. And to keep things looking good, I'll need to do all eight rotations (normally they mirror them to save memory; if the gun is only on one leg it'll look like Zecora's leg bands flipping legs for no reason except every time they walk).

On the brighter side, I now have designs and references for almost all the pony enemies (I've tried to keep the color schemes of the original monsters. I feel quite clever). I'll also be able to design pony-usable guns. That's interesting, too.

Meet the imp!

I've decided to try and keep to the color schemes of the original enemies, which means she's wearing a brown jumpsuit (with an added "TCB" on the front, though it came out far too blurry to see).

She looks adorable. If it weren't for the fact that she was trying to turn me into a pony and completely obliterate my humanity, I'd feel guilty shooting her.

Failed Experiment

So there's a ton of things zdoom can do that the original doom.exe couldn't do, like have reloading weapons.

I tried adding that. I changed the pistol and the shotgun using resources I found online.

It's not as fun as I thought. I always seemed to run out of ammo right as a demon was coming or right as a shotgunner was shooting. I died a lot. It wasn't fun.

I think we're going to keep with the normal DooM weapons.

Concept Art

So I made this blog because I actually worked a bit on it. From what I can tell, conversion serum is purple so you get this kind of thing going on.

When you paint on a tiny object, be sure to use the paintbrush. The pencil looks unnatural.
 Also the doors.

And some simplistic concept art of the enemies.

Though two things come to mind. One, this is going to be a metric crapton of spriting.

Secondly, I'm greatly amused by the arch-vile's design... but are the details even going to be visible? There's an option zdoom has that lets you use high-resolution images as textures and sprites. I might look into using that. Thoughts?

And to think it all started with a hater...

It all started with a comment on my second Raridoom test video. I've edited a word for content.

Bobby Bushtail wrote:
The fact this exists... pains me greatly. Thanks for infecting the Doom Community with this sort of blight. Its disrespectful to the original game to even conceive of a mod like this and not make it ironic or make it where you kill the little technicolored bastards with guns and s**t. Seriously this Brony thing has gone too far...

I answered in some sarcastic way and that's where that conversation ended. But he got me thinking. What if there was a game about killing ponies? How would that even work? How could that even be justified?

Then I accidentally read this story, set in the Conversion Bureau universe (but untagged as such). I'd heard of the universe but none of the stories I'd seen called to me. After that, I derped around in the groups, looking at what made this universe tick.

After a lot of research, it occurred to me that I'd rather die a human than live as a pony. Besides having fingers and hair in only a few places on my body, I kindof like me. I'm a slacker, I'm lazy, I'm sarcastic; but I'm me. And I like me. I don't mind representing myself as a pony (like on my avatar) but I wouldn't want to be one. And I could see myself killing a pony who was trying to convert me and call it justifiable self-defense.

So that's where this game comes in. It'll be a mod for DoomII (and it'll be a good, clean mod; I've learned a lot) using mostly FreeDoom textures as bases (meaning the game will work with either DoomII or FreeDoom, but the new textures are modified from FreeDoom resources). It'll be worked on after Raridoom is done or when I get hit with my ADD again.

And I might be requesting a lot of help with this one. It's fairly sketchy at the moment but already I can see I'll be doing a crapton of spriting. We'll see.

I have no idea how this will be received.
